Moderate overlap front: original test

Rating applies to 2000 models

Tested vehicle: 2000 Volvo S80 4-door

The Volvo S80 was introduced in the 1999 model year and modified beginning with 2000 models to include structural changes to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes.

Driver restraints and dummy kinematics
Dummy movement was well controlled. After the dummy moved forward into the airbag, it rebounded into the seat and then its head hit the B-pillar. However, hot gases escaping through vent holes in the driver airbag caused some melting of the vinyl "skin" on the dummy's hands, indicating the possibility of burn injuries. Also, in a separate 5 mph frontal impact without dummies in the car, both frontal airbags deployed. Such deployments not only are unnecessary in low-speed crashes but also may cause severe injuries to front-seat occupants positioned too close to the airbags.

Action shot taken during the frontal offset crash test.

The dummy's position in relation to the steering wheel and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained well.

Black residue on the dummy's hands indicates where there was contact with hot gases vented from the airbag. Additional testing showed these gases were hot enough to cause burns to drivers' hands.

Both frontal airbags deployed unexpectedly during a 5 mph frontal impact into a full-width barrier.
