Small overlap front

The small overlap front evaluation consists of a driver-side and a passenger-side component. If the results of the two evaluations differ, then the combined small overlap rating is equal to the lower rating.

Driver-side

Tested vehicle: 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid SE 4-door 4wd
Rating applies to 2026 models

The Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in hybrid was redesigned for the 2023 model year. Beginning with 2023 models built after May 2023, improvements were made to the front driver-side door latch to improve occupant protection in small overlap frontal crashes (Information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the driver door or adjacent B-pillar).

Beginning with 2026 models, changes were made to the front vehicle structure to improve driver occupant safety in driver-side small overlap front crashes. Driver-side small overlap front ratings are based on a test of a 2026 Outlander Plug-in hybrid conducted by Mitsubishi. Ratings on this page do not apply to the mild hybrid variant.

Passenger-side

Tested vehicle: 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid SE 4-door 4wd
Rating applies to 2026 models

The Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in hybrid was redesigned for the 2023 model year. Beginning with 2026 models, changes were made to the front vehicle structure and the passenger-side knee airbag to improve occupant safety in passenger-side small overlap front crashes. Passenger-side small overlap front ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test of a 2026 Outlander Plug-in hybrid conducted by Mitsubishi. Ratings on this page do not apply to the mild hybrid variant.

About the small overlap front test

Side: updated test

Tested vehicle: 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid SE 4-door 4wd
Rating applies to 2026 models

The Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in hybrid was redesigned for the 2023 model year. Beginning with 2023 models built after May 2023, improvements were made to the front driver-side torso airbag and to the driver and passenger-side interior door trim (Information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the driver door or adjacent B-pillar).

Beginning with 2026 models, side structure reinforcements were implemented to improve occupant safety in side impact crashes. Side impact ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test of a 2026 Outlander Plug-in hybrid conducted by Mitsubishi. Ratings on this page do not apply to the mild hybrid variant.

Low beams
On the straightaway, visibility was good on both sides of the road. On curves, visibility was good in all 4 tests.

The low beams created some glare.

High beams
On the straightaway, visibility was good on both sides of the road. On curves, visibility was good on the gradual left and gradual right curves and fair on the sharp right and sharp left curves.

High-beam assist compensates for some limitations of this vehicle's low beams on the sharp left curve and on the sharp right curve.
