Moderate overlap front

Rating applies to 2001-04 models

Tested vehicle: 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport LS 4wd

The Mitsubishi Montero Sport was introduced in the 1997 model year and structurally modified beginning with 2001 models to improve occupant protection in frontal offset crashes.

Driver restraints and dummy kinematics
Dummy movement was reasonably well controlled. The driver's seat tipped toward the B-pillar and during rebound, the dummy's head hit the roof rail, B-pillar, and grab handle for the left rear door.

Action shot taken during the frontal offset crash test.

The dummy's position in relation to the steering wheel and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained well.

Smeared greasepaint indicates where the dummy's head made multiple hits during rebound with the B-pillar, roof rail, grab handle, and head restraint.

A strong safety cage helped keep the tire out of the driver footwell area, maintaining the integrity of the occupant compartment. Crumpled structure in front of the occupant compartment indicates where the crash energy was absorbed.
