How the passenger-side small overlap front test is conducted

Moderate overlap front: original test

Rating applies to 2017-22 models

Tested vehicle: 2017 Honda CR-V LX 4-door 4wd

Driver restraints and dummy kinematics

Action shot taken during the Institute's moderate overlap frontal crash test.

The dummy's position in relation to the steering wheel and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained very well (Institute test car shown).

Dummy movement was well controlled in both tests. In the Institute's test, the dummy's head rebounded against the head restraint and side curtain airbag, as indicated by smeared greasepaint.

Intrusion into the driver's space was minimal in both tests. In Honda's test, all leg and foot injury measures were low. In the Institute's test, forces on the right lower leg were just high enough to indicate the possibility of injuries.

View of the vehicle after the crash showing the airbags and damage to the occupant compartment.

The rear passenger dummy's head remained a safe distance from the front seatback.

The rear passenger dummy injury values indicate a moderate risk of injury to the head or neck and a likely risk of injury to the chest. During the crash, the shoulder belt moved too far upward toward the dummy’s neck, compromising the effectiveness of the rear restraint system.

The rear passenger dummy's lap belt remained in the ideal position on the pelvis.
