Rating applies to 1994-95 models

Tested vehicle: 1995 Ford Taurus GL 4-door

The Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable were introduced in the 1986 model year. Frontal airbags for both the driver and passenger were introduced as options beginning with the 1992 model year and were made standard for the Sable in 1993 and for the Taurus in 1994.

Driver restraints and dummy kinematics

Action shot taken during the frontal offset crash test.

The dummy's position in relation to the steering wheel and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained well.

The head restraints are poor. Even when they're adjusted to the highest position, they're too far below and behind the top of an average-size male's head to provide adequate protection in a rear-end crash.

Intrusion into the driver footwell area was minimal to moderate. Injury risk to the legs and feet was low.
