Moderate overlap front: original test

Rating applies to 2012-15 models

Tested vehicle: 2012 Scion iQ 2-door

The Scion iQ was introduced in the 2012 model year. Despite its tiny proportions, it has front and rear seats and is capable of carrying 4 people.

Driver restraints and dummy kinematics
Dummy movement was reasonably well controlled. The driver side curtain and side thorax airbags deployed during the crash. During rebound, the dummy’s head moved outward and hit the window sill below the side curtain airbag.

Action shot taken during the frontal offset crash test.

The dummy finished leaning forward after the crash test, but its position in relation to the steering wheel and instrument panel indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained well.

Smeared pink greasepaint indicates where the left side of the dummy's head hit the window sill during rebound, even though the side curtain airbag deployed. Head acceleration from this hit was low.

Intrusion into the driver's space was minimal, and all leg and foot injury measures were low.

View of the vehicle after the crash with door removed, showing the side airbags and damage to the occupant compartment.

Smeared greasepaint shows where the driver dummy's head was protected from being hit by hard structures by the side curtain airbag.

Smeared greasepaint shows where the rear passenger dummy’s head was protected by the side airbag. The deployed rear window curtain airbag (pink) is visible behind the head restraint.
