January 17, 2024

Bill Westrate, chair and chief executive officer of American Family Insurance, has been elected chair of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Board of Directors for 2024. Westrate takes over from Scott Wesley Ziegler, who is retiring from Progressive Insurance, where he was general manager of personal lines.

“IIHS exemplifies the collective power and impact of the insurance industry to reduce the risk of injury and save lives,” Westrate said, “It is an honor to be a part of this important work and to see first-hand the talented and passionate people that have made IIHS one of the most influential voices in vehicle safety.”

“Bill is a great advocate for IIHS, and we are delighted to welcome him as our Board chair,” said David Harkey, president of IIHS and the Highway Loss Data Institute. “His deep understanding of our mission to save lives and prevent harm on our roadways will be an asset as we work together in the coming year to develop an updated strategic plan.”
