Test details:

The Lexus RX 330 was introduced in the 2004 model year as a replacement for the Lexus RX 300.

A hybrid-electric version of the RX, known as the RX 400h, was introduced in the 2006 model year. The RX 330 was renamed the RX 350 beginning with 2007 models because a new gasoline engine was installed.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the roof rail and grab handle above the driver door.

Injury measures — Measures taken from the neck, chest, and both legs indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. A high head acceleration occurred when the dummy's head hit the steering wheel through the airbag, indicating that head injuries would be possible. Head acceleration from the roof rail/grab handle hit was low.

  • Action shot taken during the frontal offset crash test. Larger photo
  • The dummy's position in relation to the steering wheel and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained very well. Larger photo
  • Smeared greasepaint indicates where the dummy's head slid along the roof rail and grab handle during rebound. Head acceleration from this hit was low. Larger photo
  • The RX features an airbag that deploys from the knee bolster underneath the steering column. The dummy's knees and shins hit this airbag as indicated by greasepaint. Larger photo

Additional features:

  • Side airbags: front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags
  • Driver knee airbag: a separate airbag in the lower instrument panel designed to minimize knee injuries in frontal crashes
  • Electronic stability control
  • Antilock brakes
  • Daytime running lights

Tested vehicle specifications:

  • 2004 Lexus RX 330 4wd
  • Class: Midsize luxury SUV
  • Weight: 4,140 lbs.
