Test details:

The Lexus LS 400 was redesigned for the 1995 model year.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled. After the dummy moved forward into the airbag, the seatback moved forward so that the head restraint hit the dummy's head. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the B-pillar .

Injury measures — Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity. Head acceleration from the B-pillar hit was too low to record.

Left to right:

  • Action shot taken during the frontal offset crash test.
  • The dummy's position in relation to the steering wheel and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained well.
  • The bumpers are poor. This 1997 model sustained huge damage in the rear-into-pole impact.
  • Rear bumper improvements to the 1998 model greatly reduced the damage in the rear-into-pole test at 5 mph. However, so much damage was sustained in other impacts that the overall bumper rating remains poor.

Additional features:

  • Side airbags: front seat-mounted torso airbags (beginning with 1997 models)
  • Antilock brakes
  • Daytime running lights (beginning with 1999 models)

Tested vehicle specifications:

  • 1997 Lexus LS 400 4-door
  • Class: Large luxury car
  • Weight: 3,794 lbs.
  • Side airbags: front seat-mounted torso airbags
  • Wheelbase: 112 in.
  • Length: 197 in.
  • Width: 72 in.
  • Engine: 4.0 L V8
  • EPA ratings: 19 mpg city | 25 mpg highway
