Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.

Test details:

The Subaru Legacy was redesigned for the 2005 model year.

The frontal offset crash test ratings also apply to the station wagon version of the Legacy for the 2005-07 model years (the Legacy wagon was discontinued after 2007). However, the ratings do not apply to Outback models.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the roof rail, grab handle, and sun visor.

Injury measures — Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity. Head accelerations from the roof rail, grab handle, and sun visor hits were low.

Left to right:

  • Action shot taken during the frontal offset crash test.
  • The dummy's position in relation to the steering wheel and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained very well.
  • Smeared greasepaint indicates where the dummy's head hit the roof rail, grab handle, and sun visor during rebound. Head accelerations from these hits were low.
  • Intrusion into the footwell was minimal, and all leg and foot injury measures were low.

Additional features:

  • Side airbags: front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags
  • Electronic stability control (standard beginning with 2009 models, optional on 2007-2008 models)
  • Antilock brakes
  • Daytime running lights

Tested vehicle specifications:

  • 2005 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Limited 4-door 4wd
  • Class: Midsize moderately priced car
  • Weight: 3,298 lbs.
  • Side airbags: front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags
