Test details:

The Scion iQ was introduced in the 2012 model year. Despite its tiny proportions, it has front and rear seats and is capable of carrying 4 people.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was reasonably well controlled. The driver side curtain and side thorax airbags deployed during the crash. During rebound, the dummy’s head moved outward and hit the window sill below the side curtain airbag.

Injury measures — Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity. Head acceleration from the window sill hit was low.

Left to right:

  • Action shot taken during the frontal offset crash test.
  • The dummy finished leaning forward after the crash test, but its position in relation to the steering wheel and instrument panel indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained well.
  • Smeared pink greasepaint indicates where the left side of the dummy's head hit the window sill during rebound, even though the side curtain airbag deployed. Head acceleration from this hit was low.
  • Intrusion into the driver's space was minimal, and all leg and foot injury measures were low.

Additional features:

  • Side airbags: front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags
  • Driver and front passenger knee airbags: separate airbags in the lower instrument panel designed to minimize knee injuries in frontal crashes
  • Seat cushion airbags: separate airbags in the forward portion of the driver and front passenger seat cushions to prevent occupants from sliding under the seat belts in frontal crashes
  • Rear window curtain airbag: designed to inflate in rear-end crashes to protect rear seat occupants' heads
  • Electronic stability control
  • Antilock brakes
