Test details:

The Mitsubishi Lancer was redesigned for the 2008 model year. The side ratings also apply to the hatchback version of the Lancer, known as the Sportback, beginning with 2010 models. Starting with 2012 models, the seat-mounted side torso airbags and front door trim were modified to improve occupant protection in side impact crashes. Side ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test conducted by Mitsubishi as part of side crash test verification.

Because the side structure and the rear occupant compartment of the car were not changed, the injury ratings for the passenger and the structure rating are based on tests of both the original and modified models. (The newly tested car was designated as a 2011 model but included the side torso airbag and door trim changes of the 2012 models.)

Injury measures:

Driver — Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.

Rear passenger — Measures from the dummies in the two tests, taken together, indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.

Head protection:

Driver — The dummy's head was protected from being hit by any hard structures, including the intruding barrier, by a side curtain airbag that deployed from the roof.

Rear passenger — In both tests, the dummy's head was protected from being hit by any hard structures, including the intruding barrier, by a side curtain airbag that deployed from the roof.

  • Side airbags: front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags
  • Driver knee airbag: a separate airbag in the lower instrument panel designed to minimize knee injuries in frontal crashes
