Test details:

The Chevrolet Sonic was introduced in the 2012 model year as a replacement for the Chevrolet Aveo. The frontal ratings apply to both the 4-door sedan and hatchback (5-door) versions of the Sonic.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled. The driver side curtain airbag deployed during the crash. After the dummy moved forward into the frontal airbag, its head contacted the side curtain airbag.

Injury measures — Measures taken from the neck, chest, and both legs indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. A high head acceleration occurred when the dummy's head hit the steering wheel through the airbag, indicating that head injuries would be possible.

Left to right:

  • Action shot taken during the frontal offset crash test.
  • The dummy's position in relation to the steering wheel and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained very well.
  • A high head acceleration occurred when the dummy's head hit the steering wheel through the airbag.
  • Smeared greasepaint shows where the driver dummy's head was protected from hitting hard structures during rebound by the side curtain airbag.

Additional features:

  • Side airbags: front and rear head curtain airbags and front and rear seat-mounted torso airbags
  • Rollover sensor: designed to deploy the side curtain airbags in the event of an impending rollover
  • Driver and front passenger knee airbags: separate airbags in the lower instrument panel designed to minimize knee injuries in frontal crashes
  • Electronic stability control
  • Antilock brakes
  • Daytime running lights
