Test details:

The Jaguar X-Type was introduced in the 2002 model year. All 2002 and later X-Type models manufactured after December 2001 include structural modifications to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes (note: information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door).

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of an X-Type with the structural changes in a 40 mph frontal offset crash test into a deformable barrier.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the roof rail and A-pillar.

Injury measures — Measures taken from the head, neck, chest and right leg indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the left tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be possible. Head accelerations from the roof rail/A-pillar hits were low.

Left to right:

  • Action shot taken during the frontal offset crash test.
  • The dummy's position in relation to the steering wheel and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained well.
  • Loading of the head into the airbag is shown in this photo taken during the crash test.
  • Forces on the lower left leg were just high enough to indicate the possibility of injury.

Additional features:

  • Side airbags: front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags
  • Driver knee airbag: a separate airbag in the lower instrument panel designed to minimize knee injuries in frontal crashes (beginning with 2004 models manufactured after December 2003)
  • Electronic stability control (standard beginning with 2007 models, optional on 2002-06 models)
  • Antilock brakes

Tested vehicle specifications:

  • 2002 Jaguar X-Type 3.0 4-door 4wd
