Test details:

The Nissan Leaf was introduced in the 2011 model year. The car is a plug-in battery-electric vehicle with no gasoline or diesel engine to help power the car. It has an average range of 73 miles according to the EPA, beyond which the battery must be recharged. The EPA city and highway values listed below are based on a comparison of the energy content of a kW-hr of electricity vs. a gallon of gasoline.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled. The driver side curtain and side torso airbags deployed during the crash. After the dummy moved forward into the frontal airbag, its head contacted the side curtain airbag.

Injury measures — Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.

Left to right:

  • Action shot taken during the frontal offset crash test.
  • The dummy's position in relation to the steering wheel and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained very well.
  • Smeared greasepaint indicates where the dummy's head contacted the side curtain airbag during rebound.
  • Intrusion into the driver's space was minimal, and all leg and foot injury measures were low.

Additional features:

  • Side airbags: front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags
  • Electronic stability control
  • Antilock brakes
