Test details:

The Ford Explorer was redesigned for the 2011 model year and now shares the same basic design as the Ford Flex. Frontal ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test conducted by Ford as part of frontal crash test verification.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled. The driver side curtain airbag deployed during the crash.

Injury measures — Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.

Additional features:

  • Side airbags: head curtain airbags for all three rows of seats and front seat-mounted torso airbags
  • Rollover sensor: designed to deploy the side curtain airbags in the event of an impending rollover
  • Passenger knee airbag: a separate airbag in the lower instrument panel designed to minimize knee injuries in frontal crashes (beginning with 2013 models)
  • Inflatable seat belts (optional in second row outboard seats)
  • Electronic stability control, includes roll stability control
  • Antilock brakes

Tested vehicle specifications:

  • 2011 Ford Explorer XLT 4wd
