Test details:

The Volkswagen Jetta sedan was redesigned for the 2011 model year. Two tests of the Jetta were conducted, one by the Institute and the other by Volkswagen as part of frontal crash test verification. Ratings are based on both tests, but the vehicle specifications shown below are based on the Institute’s test.

Note: The station wagon version of the Jetta, known as the Jetta SportWagen, has NOT been redesigned for the 2011-13 model years. It remains essentially the same as 2009-10 models.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled in both tests. During rebound in the test conducted by the Institute, the dummy's head hit the roof rail. During the test conducted by Volkswagen, the dummy rebounded into the seat without coming close to any stiff structure that could cause injury.

Injury measures — In each test, measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity. Head acceleration from the roof rail hit was low in the test conducted by the Institute.

Left to right:

  • Action shot taken during the Institute's frontal offset crash test.
  • The dummy's position in relation to the steering wheel and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained well (Institute test car shown).
  • Smeared greasepaint indicates where the dummy's head hit the roof rail in the Institute's test.
  • Intrusion into the driver's space was minimal in both tests, and all leg and foot injury measures were low.

Additional features:

  • Side airbags: front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags
  • Electronic stability control
  • Antilock brakes
  • Daytime running lights
