Test details:

The Hyundai Sonata was redesigned for the 2011 model year. Hyundai subsequently made several modificatons to the front structure of the car since its introduction in early 2010, with the final change effective as of September 2010. Frontal ratings are assigned by the Institute based on two tests conducted by Hyundai as part of frontal crash test verification, before and after all structural changes were made. Because the frontal ratings were not substantially affected by the changes, the ratings are based on both tests.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled in both tests. The driver side curtain and side thorax airbags deployed during the crashes. After the dummy moved forward into the frontal airbag, its head contacted the side curtain airbag.

Injury measures — In both tests, measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.

Additional features:

  • Side airbags: front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags
  • Electronic stability control
