Young driver licensing systems in the U.S.

West Virginia

To get a learners license you must:
Have a minimum age of 151
Before getting a license or restricted license you must:
Have a mandatory holding period of 6 months1
Have a minimum supervised driving time of 50 hours, 10 of which must be at night (none with driver education)
Have a minimum age of 16
Restrictions during intermediate or restricted license stage:
Nighttime restrictions 10 pm-5 am
Passenger restrictions

(family members excepted unless otherwise noted)
first 6 months—no passengers younger than 20; second 6 months–no more than 1 passenger younger than 20
Minimum age at which restrictions may be lifted:
Nighttime restrictions 17
Passenger restrictions 17

 

1In West Virginia, learner’s permit holders younger than 18 may not drive 10 pm-5 am and may not carry more than 2 passengers in addition to the supervising driver.
