Young driver licensing systems in the U.S.

Louisiana

To get a learners license you must:
Have a minimum age of 151
Before getting a license or restricted license you must:
Have a mandatory holding period of 6 months
Have a minimum supervised driving time of 50 hours, 15 of which must be at night
Have a minimum age of 161
Restrictions during intermediate or restricted license stage:
Nighttime restrictions 11 pm-5 am
Passenger restrictions

(family members excepted unless otherwise noted)
no more than one passenger younger than 21 between the hours of 6 pm-5 am; no passenger restriction from 5 am-6 pm
Minimum age at which restrictions may be lifted:
Nighttime restrictions 17
Passenger restrictions 17

 

1In Louisiana, driver education is required for a permit and an intermediate license if the applicant is younger than 18. People 18 and older must have completed a prelicensing training course including a minimum of 8 hours of behind the wheel instruction.
