To get a learners license you must:
Have a minimum age of 14, 6 months1
Before getting a license or restricted license you must:
Have a mandatory holding period of 6 months
Have a minimum supervised driving time of 50 hours, 10 of which must be at night
Have a minimum age of 152
Restrictions during intermediate or restricted license stage:
Nighttime restrictions 11 p.m.-5 a.m.
Passenger restrictions (family members excepted unless otherwise noted) first 6 months—no more than 1 passenger younger than 18; second 6 months—no more than 3 passengers younger than 18
Minimum age at which restrictions may be lifted:
Nighttime restrictions 12 months or at age 18, whichever occurs first (min. age: 16)
Passenger restrictions 12 months or at age 18, whichever occurs first (min. age: 16)

1In Montana, enrollment in or completion of driver education is required for permit applicants younger than 15.
