To get a learners permit you must
Have a minimum age of 14, 6 months1
Before getting an intermediate or restricted license you must
Have your permit for 6 months
Complete minimum supervised driving of 50 hours, 10 of which must be at night
Have a minimum age of 152
Restrictions during intermediate or restricted license stage
Nighttime restriction 11 p.m.-5 a.m.
Passenger limit (family members excepted unless otherwise noted) first 6 months—no more than 1 passenger younger than 18; second 6 months—no more than 3 passengers younger than 18
Minimum age at which restrictions may be lifted
Nighttime restriction 12 months or at age 18, whichever occurs first (min. age: 16)
Passenger restriction 12 months or at age 18, whichever occurs first (min. age: 16)

1In Montana, enrollment in or completion of driver education is required for permit applicants younger than 15.
