To get a learners license you must:
Have a minimum age of 15, 9 months
Before getting a license or restricted license you must:
Have a mandatory holding period of 9 months1
Have a minimum supervised driving time of 60 hours, 10 of which must be at night
Have a minimum age of 16, 6 months
Restrictions during intermediate or restricted license stage:
Nighttime restrictions midnight-5 a.m.2
Passenger restrictions (family members excepted unless otherwise noted) no passengers younger than 18 secondary enforcement
Minimum age at which restrictions may be lifted:
Nighttime restrictions until age 18 (min. age: 18)
Passenger restrictions 5 months or until age 18, whichever occurs first (min. age: 16, 11 mos.)

1In Maryland, all license applicants younger than 25 must hold a learner's permit for nine months before taking the road test and all applicants 25 and older must hold the permit for 45 days.

2In Maryland, the nighttime driving restriction only applies to intermediate license holders younger than 18.
