Most new roof strength ratings are good

Automakers are working fast to earn good ratings for occupant protection in rollover crashes. When the Institute launched roof strength evaluations in 2009 to compare vehicle crashworthiness in rollovers, only one-third of the SUVs that were tested earned good ratings (see Status Report special issue: roof strength, March 24, 2009). Since then about 100 vehicles have been tested, and most are rated good.
