Applies to 2012-14 models

Important: Frontal crash test ratings should be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
The Toyota Yaris hatchback was redesigned for the 2012 model year. The Yaris 4-door sedan was not redesigned for 2012, its final model year. Therefore the small overlap frontal ratings detailed below apply only to the 4-door hatchback.
The driver space was not maintained well, with maximum intrusion of the lower interior of 27 cm at the lower hinge pillar and maximum intrusion of the upper interior of 16-17 cm at the hinge pillar and instrument panel. The steering wheel was pushed back 8 cm toward the driver.
Measures from the dummy indicate that injuries to the left lower leg would be possible in a crash of this severity. The risk of significant injuries to other body regions is low, including head injury risk from the instrument panel hit.
Restraints and dummy kinematics
The dummy’s head barely contacted the frontal airbag before sliding off the left side as the steering column moved to the right. Additionally, the seat belt allowed excessive forward excursion of the dummy’s head and torso, contributing to the head hitting the instrument panel. The side curtain airbag did not deploy. During rebound, the head moved outside the open side window, partially due to the nondeployment and leaving the head vulnerable to contact with side structure and outside objects.
