Important: Frontal crash test ratings should be compared only among vehicles of similar weight. |
The Toyota Camry was redesigned for the 2012 model year. Beginning with 2014 models built after December 2013, the front structure was modified to improve occupant protection in small overlap frontal crashes. (Information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on the driver door or adjacent B-pillar.) For new car buyers, the 2014 cars with the modifications are listed as "2014.5" models on the window sticker.
Structure
The driver space was maintained reasonably well, with maximum intrusion of the lower interior at the parking brake pedal, which was pushed in 17 cm toward the driver. Lower hinge pillar intrusion measured 16 cm, and upper interior intrusion measured 8-10 cm at the hinge pillar and instrument panel.
Injury measures
Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.
Restraints and dummy kinematics
The dummy’s head contacted the frontal airbag but nearly slid off the left side, leaving the head vulnerable to contact with forward side structure. The side curtain airbag deployed but does not have sufficient forward coverage to protect the head from contact with forward side structure and outside objects.
