The Toyota Camry was redesigned for the 2012 model year. Beginning with 2014 models built after December 2013, the front structure was modified to improve occupant protection in small overlap frontal crashes. (Information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on the driver door or adjacent B-pillar.)

Beginning with 2015 models, the side curtain airbags were lengthened to further improve occupant protection in this same type of crash. Assessment of side airbag coverage is determined by the Institute based on a test of a 2015 model Camry conducted by Toyota as part of small overlap front test verification for side curtain airbag coverage. All other assessments, ratings, and vehicle specifications are based on an Institute test of a 2014 model Camry built after the front structure was modified.

Structure

In the Institute's test of the 2014 model, the driver space was maintained reasonably well, with maximum intrusion of the lower interior at the parking brake pedal, which was pushed in 17 cm toward the driver. Lower hinge pillar intrusion measured 16 cm, and upper interior intrusion measured 8-10 cm at the hinge pillar and instrument panel.

Injury measures

In the Institute's test, measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.

Restraints and dummy kinematics

In the Institute's test, the dummy’s head contacted the frontal airbag but nearly slid off the left side, leaving the head vulnerable to contact with forward side structure. In the test of the 2015 model conducted by Toyota, the side curtain airbag deployed and has sufficient forward coverage to protect the head from contact with side structure and outside objects.

Dummy movement was well controlled. The driver side curtain airbag deployed during the crash. During rebound, the dummy's head contacted the side curtain airbag and the grab handle above the door.

In the test, the strength of the roof is determined by pushing a metal plate against one side of it at a slow but constant speed. The force applied relative to the vehicle's weight is known as the strength-to-weight ratio. This graph shows how the ratio varied as the test of this vehicle progressed. The peak strength-to-weight ratio recorded at any time before the roof is crushed 5 inches is the key measurement of roof strength.

A good rating requires a strength-to-weight ratio of at least 4.
