The Smart Fortwo was introduced in the 2008 model year. As its name implies, the Smart seats only two people; there is no rear seat. Beginning with 2011 models, head curtain airbags and separate seat-mounted side torso airbags replaced the combination seat-mounted head and torso side airbags used in earlier models. Modifications were also made to the door structure.
Beginning with 2012 models built after June 2012, the head curtain airbags were modified (note: information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door). Side ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test conducted by Mercedes, the manufacturer of the Smart, as part of side crash test verification. (The newly tested car was designated as a 2011 model but included the head curtain airbag changes of 2012 models built after June 2012.)
Driver — Measures taken from the dummy indicate that rib fractures and/or internal organ injuries plus a fracture of the pelvis would be possible in a crash of this severity.
Driver — The dummy's head was protected from being hit by any hard structures, including the intruding barrier, by a side curtain airbag that deployed from the roof.
