The Scion xD was introduced in the 2008 model year. Beginning with 2012 models, modifications were made to the front seat belts to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. Beginning with 2013 models, further modifications were made, including the addition of seat cushion airbags to the driver and front passenger seats.
Moderate overlap frontal ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test of a 2013 model Scion xD conducted by Toyota as part of frontal crash test verification. Because the structure was not changed, the structure rating is based on this test and earlier tests of the 2008 and 2012 models of the car.
Injury measures
Measures taken from the neck and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. A high head acceleration occurred when the dummy's head hit the steering wheel through the airbag, indicating that head injuries would be possible. Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would also be possible. Head acceleration from the roof rail hit was low.

Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the roof rail.
