The Mazda CX-9 was introduced in the 2007 model year.

Structure

The driver's space was seriously compromised by intruding structure. Lower interior intrusion measured as much as 43 cm at the lower hinge pillar. The parking brake pedal was pushed back 25 cm toward the driver. Upper interior intrusion measured 44 cm at the hinge pillar and 33-38 cm at the instrument panel. The steering column was pushed back 12 cm toward the driver.

Injury measures

A high head acceleration occurred when the dummy's head hit the window frame, indicating that head injuries would be possible in a crash of this severity. Measures indicate that injuries to the left knee also would be possible.

Restraints and dummy kinematics

The dummy’s head barely contacted the frontal airbag before sliding off the left side as the steering column moved 33 cm to the right, resulting in little airbag cushioning for the chest. Additionally, the side curtain airbag did not deploy, allowing the head to hit the intruding driver door window frame and window sill.

Measures taken from the neck and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. High forces occurred on the dummy's head when it hit the steering wheel through the airbag, indicating that head injuries would be possible. Forces on the right tibia indicate that lower leg injuries would be possible. Head acceleration from the roof rail hit was low.

Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the roof rail.
