Important: Frontal crash test ratings should be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.

The Land Rover Discovery was re-engineered during the 1999 model year and renamed the Discovery Series II. The size of the cargo area was increased, and for all 1999 and later models manufactured after October 1998, the vehicle was structurally modified to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. (Note: Information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door.)

The Institute has evaluated the crashworthiness of a 1999 Discovery Series II with the structural changes in a 40 mph frontal offset crash test into a deformable barrier.

Injury measures

Measures taken from the head, neck, and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on both tibias indicate that injuries to the lower legs would be possible. Acceleration on the left foot indicate that injuries to the foot would also be possible. Head acceleration from the B-pillar hit was low.

Restraints and dummy kinematics

Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head tilted toward the driver door and then hit the B-pillar as it continued moving rearward. There was too much upward movement of the steering wheel.
