Important: Frontal crash test ratings should be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.

The Infiniti M sedan was redesigned for the 2011 model year and renamed the M37 and M56 because the sizes of the two available engines were increased. A hybrid-electric version of the M, known as the M Hybrid, was introduced in the 2012 model year. Beginning with 2013 models, design changes were made to the frontal airbags and seat belts.

The Infiniti M sedan was renamed the Infiniti Q70 beginning with the 2014 model year, available with V6, V8, and hybrid V6 powertrains. No substantive changes were made with the model name change for 2014. Therefore, the small overlap frontal ratings of the tested 2014 model Q70 also apply to all 2013 M models.

Structure

The driver space was maintained reasonably well, with maximum intrusion of the lower interior of 22 cm at the parking brake pedal and 15 cm at the lower hinge pillar. The door sill was pushed in laterally 10 cm toward the driver. Upper interior intrusion measured 8-9 cm at the hinge pillar and instrument panel.

Injury measures

Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.

Restraints and dummy kinematics

The dummy’s movement was well controlled. The dummy’s head loaded the frontal airbag, which stayed in front of the dummy until rebound. The side curtain airbag deployed and has sufficient forward coverage to protect the head from contact with side structure and outside objects. The side torso airbag also deployed.

Two moderate overlap frontal tests of the M were conducted by Nissan, one of a 2011 model and the other representing a 2013 model as part of frontal crash test verification. These cars are rated separately, except that the structure ratings for both vehicles are based on both tests. (The second car tested by Nissan was designated as a 2012 model but included the airbag and seat belt changes of the 2013 models.)

Beginning with 2014 models, the M sedan was renamed the Q70, available with V6, V8, and hybrid V6 powertrains.

Injury measures

Measures taken from the neck, chest, and both legs indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. A high head acceleration occurred when the dummy's head hit the steering wheel through the airbag, indicating that head injuries would be possible.

Restraints and dummy kinematics

Dummy movement was well controlled. The driver side curtain and side thorax airbags deployed during the crash. After the dummy moved forward into the frontal airbag, its head contacted the side curtain airbag.

A hybrid-electric version of the M, known as the M Hybrid, was introduced in the 2012 model year. Beginning with 2013 models, design changes were made to the seat-mounted side torso airbags to improve occupant protection in side impact crashes.

Two side tests of the M were conducted by Nissan, one a 2011 M37x and the other a 2013 M56x as part of side crash test verification. These cars are rated separately, except that the structure ratings for both vehicles are based on both tests, as are rear dummy injury and head protection ratings, because no changes were made to the rear occupant compartment.

Beginning with 2014 models, the M sedan was renamed the Q70, available with V6, V8, and hybrid V6 powertrains.

Injury measures

Driver — Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.

Passenger — In both tests, measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.

Head protection

Driver — The dummy’s head was protected from being hit by any hard structures, including the intruding barrier, by a side curtain airbag that deployed from the roof.

Passenger — In both tests, the dummy’s head was protected from being hit by any hard structures, including the intruding barrier, by a side curtain airbag that deployed from the roof.

2011 Infiniti M37 4-door
Roof strength test ratings can be compared across vehicle categories.

In the test, the strength of the roof is determined by pushing a metal plate against one side of it at a slow but constant speed. The force applied relative to the vehicle's weight is known as the strength-to-weight ratio. This graph shows how the ratio varied as the test of this vehicle progressed. The peak strength-to-weight ratio recorded at any time before the roof is crushed 5 inches is the key measurement of roof strength.

A good rating requires a strength-to-weight ratio of at least 4. In other words, the roof must withstand a force of at least 4 times the vehicle's weight before the plate crushes the roof by 5 inches. For an acceptable rating, the minimum required strength-to-weight ratio is 3.25. For a marginal rating, it is 2.5. Anything lower than that is poor.
