The 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan is a twin of the tested vehicle.

The Chrysler Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan were redesigned for the 2008 model year, and the Volkswagen Routan was introduced in the 2009 model year and discontinued after the 2012 model year.

Structure

The driver's space was seriously compromised by intruding structure. Lower interior intrusion measured as much as 39 cm at the lower hinge pillar. The parking brake pedal was pushed back 36 cm into the dummy's left lower leg. Upper interior intrusion measured as much as 39 cm at the instrument panel and 35 cm at the hinge pillar. The door sill was pushed in laterally 20 cm toward the driver, and the steering column was pushed back 17 cm.

Injury measures

Measures from the dummy indicate that injuries to the left hip, left knee, and left lower leg would be likely in a crash of this severity. Injuries to the right lower leg would also be possible, but head injury risk from the instrument panel hit was low. The dummy's left lower leg skin was gouged and torn by the intruding parking brake pedal, and the left knee skin was torn by a steel brace underlying the knee bolster.

Restraints and dummy kinematics

The dummy’s head barely contacted the frontal airbag before sliding off the left side as the steering column moved 22 cm to the right, resulting in little airbag cushioning for the chest and contributing to the head hitting the intruding instrument panel. The side curtain airbag deployed but does not have sufficient forward coverage to protect the head from contact with forward side structure and outside objects. The side torso airbag deployed.

The Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country were redesigned for the 2008 model year, and the Volkswagen Routan was introduced in the 2009 model year. Beginning with the 2011 models, side airbags designed to protect drivers' and front passengers' torsos were added to the side curtain airbags that were already standard on 2008-10 models. The Routan was discontinued after the 2012 model year.

Two tests of the vans were conducted, one by the Institute in 2008 and the other by Chrysler in 2012 as part of side crash test verification. The vehicles are rated separately, except that structure ratings for the vehicles are based on both tests, as are the rear passenger injury and head protection ratings.

Roof strength test ratings can be compared across vehicle categories.

In the test, the strength of the roof is determined by pushing a metal plate against one side of it at a slow but constant speed. The force applied relative to the vehicle's weight is known as the strength-to-weight ratio. This graph shows how the ratio varied as the test of this vehicle progressed. The peak strength-to-weight ratio recorded at any time before the roof is crushed 5 inches is the key measurement of roof strength.

A good rating requires a strength-to-weight ratio of at least 4. In other words, the roof must withstand a force of at least 4 times the vehicle's weight before the plate crushes the roof by 5 inches. For an acceptable rating, the minimum required strength-to-weight ratio is 3.25. For a marginal rating, it is 2.5. Anything lower than that is poor.
